Due to the limited opportunities for pesticide application during the winter season, many farmers end up with leftover supplies. Proper storage of these pesticides is crucial to prevent degradation, evaporation, and potential harm to humans and animals. Here’s how you can manage your stock safely:
1. **Do Not Dispose Carelessly**: Always consult the product guide before storing leftover pesticides. Any chemicals that have become ineffective should be buried deep in the soil rather than discarded. This prevents environmental contamination and accidental poisoning.
2. **Preserve Labels**: Keep the labels intact along with the instructions for use. If any packaging gets damaged, replace it promptly with similar containers. For lost or faded labels, write down the name, usage, dosage, expiration date, and application scope directly on the container and attach it securely.
3. **Seal Properly**: Liquid pesticides in bottles require an inner seal and a tightly closed cap to avoid evaporation. For powdered pesticides in bags, double-seal them with plastic to protect against moisture that could lead to clumping and spoilage.
4. **Control Temperature**: Most powdered pesticides degrade faster at high temperatures, potentially melting, decomposing, or even becoming hazardous. Emulsion-based pesticides may lose their effectiveness under heat as well. Conversely, some liquid pesticides freeze at low temperatures, which can damage the container. Store them indoors where the temperature remains above 1°C. Additionally, phoxim pesticides are sensitive to light; prolonged exposure can degrade their quality. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
5. **Maintain Dry Conditions**: Powders and plant growth regulators absorb moisture easily, leading to clumping. Ensure the storage area is dry, preventing leaks from rain or snow. Maintain humidity levels below 75% and provide adequate ventilation.
6. **Categorize and Separate**: Pesticides can be grouped based on their chemical nature—acidic, alkaline, or neutral. Examples include trichlorfon and dimethoate (acids), Bordeaux mixture (alkaline), and phoxim (neutral). Store these separately, keeping at least 0.5 meters between groups to prevent reactions. Never mix incompatible types in one container, as this can render them useless.
7. **Safety Precautions**: Given the varying toxicities of pesticides, store them in locked cabinets or boxes. Avoid placing them near food items like grains, oils, seeds, or vegetables. Emulsions and fumigants should not be stored alongside flammable materials like matches or fireworks. Keep them away from bedrooms and areas frequently accessed by people and animals, ensuring they’re in a well-ventilated, dry, and cool spot.
8. **Regular Checks**: Periodically inspect all stored pesticides to ensure no damage has occurred due to rising dampness, leaks, or broken packaging. Early detection helps prevent further deterioration.
Proper management ensures safety while minimizing risks associated with improper storage. Remember, every detail counts when handling chemicals that impact both health and the environment.
