Japan began assembling nuclear fusion power experimental device "JT60SA"

The Nuclear Fusion Institute under the Japan Atomic Energy Research and Development Agency announced on the 28th that it had begun assembling the JT60SA nuclear fusion power experimental device. The device was jointly constructed by Japan and the European Union and is expected to begin operation in 2019.

Solar luminescence and heat depend on its endless nuclear fusion reaction. For example, the isotopes of hydrogen—the atomic nuclei of helium and neon are polymerized with each other under ultra-high temperature conditions—to generate heavier new nuclei and release large amounts of energy. If this reaction can be simulated in a controlled manner on Earth, the enormous energy released can be continuously used to generate electricity.

At present, Japan, the European Union, China, the United States, South Korea, Russia, and India are building seven international thermal fusion reactors in France and are expected to begin operations in 2020. "JT60SA" was built for the research and development of the prototype reactor for the next phase of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor.

The construction of "JT60SA" was mainly carried out by a large-scale modification of the experimental device "JT60" operated before this, and new parts such as coils capable of closing the plasma were used. Plasma is an essential material for nuclear fusion.

Compared with other energy sources, nuclear fusion materials are derived from seawater and are endless. This reaction does not produce greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, and it has almost no radioactive harm to the environment. At present, fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, and coal are gradually depleting, and the renewable energy sources such as nuclear fission energy, wind energy, solar energy, and bio-energy that human beings are using have limitations.

The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor Project was initially initiated by the Soviet Union and the United States in 1985. However, this plan was grounded for various reasons. In the past 10 years, energy, environmental protection and other issues have brought new challenges and the plan has regained the attention of all parties. (Reporter Lan Jianzhong)
