Metal-air batteries have been widely used in electric vehicles (plug-in hybrid vehicles and pure electric vehicles) and energy storage devices (smart grids), and can also be used as emergency power sources.

Similar to other battery technologies, metal-air batteries also have many scientific and technical problems. The main problems are the sluggish kinetics of cathodes and the low energy efficiency of anodes (due to metal oxides, hydroxides or other substances at the anode). Severe passivation caused by surface area aggregation, self-discharge and corrosion, high overpotential caused by poor air cathode structure, large polarization resistance, uncontrolled system heat dissipation, long-term operation failure, actual energy Density and application are limited.

The research team of the Key Laboratory of Graphene Technologies and Applications of Zhejiang Province and the Advanced Li-ion Battery Engineering Lab pioneered the development of a kilowatt (kilowatt- Scale) Aluminum air battery, which uses a highly efficient graphene-based catalyst, enhances the air cathode structure and self-developed aluminum alloy anode with graphene additive, and has excellent electrochemical performance.

Optimized for this industrial design and system integration solution, the battery can be used to overcome thermal runaway problems.

The agency has published nearly 20 research papers and applied for more than 20 technical patents on aluminum air batteries.

The research team demonstrated a kilowatt-scale graphene-based aluminum air battery system with high energy density, battery capacity of up to 20 kWh, and power output of up to 1000 W.

The battery system can continuously power TVs, desktop computers, electric fans and 60-watt bulbs for more than 20 hours.

The research team also established a laboratory production line and is currently developing a 5 kW aluminum air battery.
