This study used cellulose nanofibers and natural vascular chambers inside the wood to process it in a way that produces optical properties in the material, thereby dissipating heat. The research team removed lignin, which is a component of wood, which enhances the strength and color of wood. The result is a light-colored material made of cellulose nanofibers.
The wood is then compressed to restore its strength, and a super-hydrophobic compound is added to protect it. The result is a bright white building material that is stronger than steel and can be used to build roofs and remove heat from buildings. The heat dissipation performance does not require electricity. Tests conducted on a hot and sunny day in Arizona showed that even during the hottest day of the day, the temperature of the cooled wood is 5-6 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the temperature of the surrounding air. It is also 12 degrees colder than natural wood.
The team estimates that if used in buildings built since 2004, the new wood will save 20% on air-conditioning costs. Cooling homes in a hot environment is one of the biggest energy consumption. There is no indication when this wood can be used for commercial deployment.
