MIT research and development of new materials for a long time soaked in water is not afraid of cold

MIT develops new materials

How do mammals such as beavers and otters live in icy water for long periods of time without thick layers of fat like walruses and whales? Because of the large amount of air that can be stored in the fur, a thermal insulation layer is formed, so even if there is no thick layer of fat, they can still live in cold sea water for a long time.

Inspired by this, MIT researchers thought of making a synthetic material similar to these animals, and in the future will produce lighter, warmer diving suits. Anette Peko Hosoi, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said that divers need to stay underwater for long periods of time. Therefore, the insulation of the human body is particularly important, and the existing neoprene insulation materials are too bulky. It is very inconvenient for underwater people to dive.

So MIT researchers made polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) rubber into a kind of artificial fur by moulding. In order to accurately control the density and length of the fur, the researchers also used a mathematical model to test. The material will be lighter than existing wetsuit materials, and it will also retain air, allowing the diver's movements to be more flexible while still maintaining normal body temperature.
