Australian scientists successfully sequester carbon dioxide

Australian researchers are working on a plan to store carbon. They claim to be able to prove that this technology is effective and safe. However, critics still say that the scale of such trials is too small to bring about critical results.

Scientists at the Carbon Absorption Project in Western Melbourne say that after three and a half years of research, they can now prove that this carbon sequestration will be a safe and effective method.

In March 2008, the scientists began to inject carbon dioxide into the underground in Warrnambool, a coastal town in Victoria, southern Australia. They injected 65,000 tons of carbon dioxide-rich gas into gas fields where natural gas had been used up. The gas field is two kilometers deep underground.

This scientific team belonging to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Australia said that the carbon dioxide contained in natural gas fields has not shown signs of release. The research organization receives funding from the Australian government.

Storage of carbon dioxide helps reduce global climate change

The research team scientist Charles Jenkins said, “Our research may have a significant effect on reducing global greenhouse gas pollution. A lot of waste natural gas fields are available. It is estimated that after 2050, we can eliminate two-thirds of the carbon dioxide. So for the whole world, this is a very effective method."

Despite such optimistic views, they cannot persuade critics. Critics believe that the process of storing CO2 underground is still uneconomical and unreliable if it is implemented on a large scale.

Williamson, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of New Zealand at Canterbury, said that the Australian study is not yet a conclusion. He said: "They only let this method work in a short period of time, in small-scale experiments, and in specific natural gas fields."

However, those who favor the closure method insist that without such technology, Australia will not be able to effectively reduce carbon emissions.

The process of storing carbon from power generation and other industrial emissions underground was identified as a clean development technology at the climate conference held in Durban, South Africa this month.

Australian scientists believe that the method of aggregating and sequestering carbon dioxide from commercial power plants will be realized by 2020.
