The corn pest is a new threat to the roots of parasitic corn. It doesn't only affect corn but also harms various grass crops and weeds, such as wheat, millet, and sorghum. Effective **pesticide** application at the right time is crucial for managing this issue.
The main signs of damage appear in summer maize seedlings. After infestation, the base of the stem turns black, and the plant becomes weak. The above-ground parts become short and thin, and in severe cases, the entire plant may die, significantly affecting yield. This pest has three generations per year. The first generation occurs from late April to mid-June, mainly targeting wheat. The second generation appears from mid-June to early August, focusing on summer maize seedlings. The third generation happens in August, and by mid-September, it mainly affects corn and sorghum. At this stage, the crops are nearly mature, so the impact on yield is relatively low.
The first instar nymph does not produce a waxy protective layer, making it an ideal time for chemical control.
Control methods include:
1. Crop rotation: Sunflower stalks can be planted instead of corn, as they are only harmful to grassy plants and not to dicotyledonous crops like soybeans and peanuts. This helps reduce infestations in heavily affected areas.
2. Selecting resistant varieties: Certain crop varieties, such as Nongda 108 and Ludan 50, are more resistant to pests and have strong stress tolerance. These should be prioritized in planting.
3. Strengthening field management: After harvesting wheat or corn, plow the fields thoroughly, remove root stalks, and dispose of them properly. Adding organic manure, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers can help promote healthy root development in maize. Regular weeding and timely irrigation during dry periods are also important to maintain proper soil moisture. Watering winter wheat fields can help reduce the occurrence of this pest.
4. Chemical control: Before sowing, use a 35% carbofur seed coating agent at 2–3% of the seed weight, or mix 60% phorate (or 50% methyl parathion) with water in a 1:50:500 ratio. In early October, it's the best time to target the second instar nymphs. Apply 48% insecticide Lestone, 40% chlorpyrifos, 50% methamidophos, 40% omethoate, or 50% phoxim EC diluted 800–1000 times. You can also pour the solution directly around the base of the corn seedlings using a sprayer.
