Fujian Province Fertilizer Quality Sampling Rate 92%

In 2013, the Fujian Provincial Administration for Industry and Commerce conducted a special inspection on chemical fertilizers in the market. The results showed that the overall quality of fertilizers was generally good, with a pass rate of 92%. However, 8% of the products still had various issues, indicating the need for continued vigilance. During the inspection, 50 fertilizer samples were collected from 25 agricultural material wholesale and retail units in Fuzhou and Quanzhou. These samples included four types of fertilizers—compound fertilizer, compound superphosphate, superphosphate, and organic fertilizer—as well as calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer. The samples came from 42 different manufacturers across 30 cities in eight provinces, including Fujian, Shandong, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Hunan, and Hubei. Out of these, 46 samples passed the test, resulting in a 92% pass rate. One of the main issues found in substandard compound fertilizers was insufficient potassium content. Potassium plays a crucial role in making cereal crops full of grains, while phosphorus helps in root development and seed formation. For organic fertilizers, the primary problems were low organic matter content and incorrect labeling on the packaging. Based on the findings, the Fujian Provincial Consumer Council advised farmers to be cautious when purchasing fertilizers. Here are some key tips: First, always check the packaging. Fertilizer bags should be clearly labeled with important details such as total nutrients, available phosphorus and potassium, chlorine content, moisture levels, production license numbers, product names, and manufacturer contact information. High-concentration fertilizers should be packed in polyethylene-lined bags to prevent moisture damage. Second, don’t be misled by large or small print. Some manufacturers use bold text to highlight brand names or selling points, while hiding critical information in small print. For example, a product might display “Russia” prominently but have small text stating it’s “used” or made from “raw materials.” Similarly, some products may emphasize “potassium” while downplaying the presence of “chlorine.” Third, use your sense of smell. Different fertilizers have distinct odors. Ammonium bicarbonate has a strong ammonia smell, urea is odorless, and compound fertilizers usually have a slight sour smell. Superphosphate should also have a mild sour scent without any strong or pungent odors. Fourth, avoid being tempted by cheap prices. Lower cost doesn’t always mean better quality, and buying low-quality fertilizers can lead to poor crop yields and financial loss. Lastly, always keep your purchase receipts and report any issues promptly. Since fertilizer problems often become apparent only after prolonged use, it's essential to retain proof of purchase. If you encounter fake or substandard products, report them immediately to local agricultural authorities, technical supervision departments, industry and commerce agencies, or the Consumer Council. This helps protect both your rights and the integrity of the market.
