Korea Develops Bio Sensors Made of CMOS and Carbon Nanotubes

On February 24, 2015, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) presented a dissertation speech on the ISSCC 2015 International Conference on Semiconductor Circuit Technology and introduced the medical treatment using CMOS and carbon nanotubes. Sensors (speech number: 16.6). The sensor is fabricated by arranging carbon nanotube electrodes on a CMOS wafer fabricated using a 0.35 μm process.

The characteristic of this sensor is that it does not use metal electrode connection wires. The wire is mainly used to exchange signals with the outside and provide the supply voltage. This time, the sensor is to let the pen reader directly touch the sensor on the metal plate to load the voltage, and then through the personal computer connected with the pen reader and The smartphone reads the measurement results.

Carbon nanotubes can be processed to the same degree as biomolecules and are therefore often used as biosensors. However, when carbon nanotubes are used with CMOS technology, processing must be done carefully to prevent shorting after the carbon nanotubes come in contact with the metal electrodes.

The advantage of the sensor developed by KAIST this time is that there is no need to prevent short-circuit post-processing and surface processing, and therefore the manufacturing cost is lower than the conventional sensors made of CMOS and carbon nanotubes.
