Research shows that new materials can reduce solar power costs

According to a new study by the University of Warwick, UK, new materials can reduce the cost of solar power generation. The study was published in the latest issue of Nature-Energy magazine. Researchers such as Dr. Rose Hatton and Professor Richard Wharton used tin to make solar cells, making the battery production process easier.

Perovskite solar cells have quickly become an effective way of solar power generation. However, relying on lead for battery production has severely hindered its commercialization because lead itself is toxic. Researchers have shown that perovskites with tin instead of lead are more stable and have proven to be effective substitutes for solar cells. Perovskite solar cells are lighter in weight and can be compatible with flexible substrates. Their application will exceed that of flat-panel silicon solar cells currently occupying the photovoltaic market, especially in consumer electronics and transportation applications.

Lead-free batteries make solar energy cheaper, safer to use, and more economical. This is likely to increase the popularity of solar energy in daily life. Solar power applications will be more extensive and can be applied in laptops, mobile phones and automotive products.

The research team showed that the solar cell device structure will be greatly simplified, but it will not affect the performance and the manufacturing cost will also be reduced.

Hatton said that the development of alternative energy sources is imperative. He hopes that this work will help the world carry out a wide range of lead-free perovskite solar cell research and help people cope with the threat of climate change caused by excessive dependence on fossil fuels.
