Conditioner technology: expander in feed processing

The expander, also known as an EXPANDER, is commonly referred to as a ring gap extruder in China. Its working principle is similar to that of a traditional extruder, but it has unique features that make it particularly effective for certain processing applications. The main function of the expander is to increase the heat applied to the powder before granulation by converting mechanical energy into thermal energy. As the powder is forced through the narrow gap between the screw and the die under high pressure, it undergoes compaction, shearing, and intense friction with both the screw and the cylinder walls. This process generates significant heat, which helps achieve several key objectives such as ripening, sterilization, and improving the quality of the final granules. One of the key differences between the expander and a standard extruder is its adjustable die gap. This feature allows operators to fine-tune the level of extrusion, friction, and shear forces experienced by the material inside the tempering chamber. By adjusting the die gap, the amount of heat transferred to the powder can be controlled, making the process more adaptable to different materials and desired outcomes. Typically, the expander can generate pressures up to 40 MPa and temperatures ranging from 120°C to 130°C. The material remains in this environment for about 3 to 5 seconds, during which rapid physical changes occur, leading to improved starch gelatinization and protein solubility. However, this high-temperature process can also result in the loss of heat-sensitive nutrients, which is an important consideration when using expanders in food or feed production.

Liquid superplasticizer is the most important admixture for concrete, in which PCE or polycarboxylate is the best performance and most efficient. Base liquid polycarboxylate allows to mix with many other additives to achieve certain admixture to be added on jobsite or concrete plant. High water reducing type and high slump retention type PCE superplasticizer are available to choose.
