The expander, also known as the EXPANDER, is commonly referred to as a ring gap extruder in China. Its operational principle is similar to that of a traditional extruder, but it has unique features that make it particularly effective for certain applications. The device uses mechanical energy to add heat to the powder before granulation. As the material is forced through the narrow gap between the screw and the die under high pressure, it undergoes compaction, shearing, and intense friction with both the screw and the barrel. This process generates significant heat, which helps achieve proper maturation, sterilization, and improved granulation. One key difference between the expander and a regular extruder is the adjustable die gap. This feature allows operators to control the level of extrusion, friction, and shear force applied to the powder within the tempering chamber, thereby regulating the amount of heat transferred into the material. Typically, the expander can generate pressures up to 40 MPa and temperatures ranging from 120°C to 130°C. Under these conditions, the material remains for about 3 to 5 seconds, during which rapid physical changes occur—such as increased starch gelatinization and improved solubility of proteins. However, this high-temperature processing can lead to the loss of heat-sensitive nutrients in the material. Despite this drawback, expanders are widely used in the feed industry due to their efficiency in improving product quality and consistency. They play an important role in modern animal nutrition, helping to produce more digestible and uniform feed products.
