Gas water heater use and then alarm

On the first day of the first lunar month, children returning home from visiting relatives discovered both parents unresponsive in the bathroom. When police and medical personnel arrived, they confirmed that both had stopped breathing. This tragic incident has once again raised concerns about carbon monoxide poisoning, a growing issue in Zhoushan, Zhejiang. Since last winter, several cases of poisoning have been linked to the improper installation and use of gas water heaters. Many homes are tightly sealed, with no windows in the bathrooms where these devices are often installed. This lack of ventilation makes it nearly impossible to expel harmful gases, increasing the risk of poisoning. Experts strongly advise that only certified professionals should install gas water heaters. It is crucial not to bypass or block the exhaust pipe, which should be directly connected to the outside. When using a gas heater for a bath, always ensure proper ventilation. Avoid having multiple people use the heater one after another, as this can lead to incomplete combustion and dangerous gas buildup. Even when installed correctly, it's important to monitor the condition of your water heater. According to national regulations, the lifespan of a gas water heater is typically 6 to 8 years. Once it exceeds this period, it should be replaced immediately. Even within its service life, it's recommended to have it inspected by a professional every 1–2 years to check for aging components or potential issues. Users should also regularly check the gas hose and connections for signs of wear, looseness, or damage. If any problems are detected, contact the gas company right away. Experts warn that using the heater for too long—more than 30 minutes at a time—can deplete oxygen levels in the room, leading to unsafe conditions. Most modern water heaters now come with automatic shut-off features after 30 minutes of continuous use. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety when using gas appliances. Awareness and regular maintenance can help prevent such tragedies from happening again. (Zhang Bo, Zhou Yan)
