On the first day of the lunar new year, a tragic incident occurred in a family home. Children returning from visiting relatives found both parents unconscious in the bathroom. Emergency services and medical personnel arrived but confirmed that the couple had no signs of life. The cause was later identified as carbon monoxide poisoning, likely due to a gas water heater malfunctioning in an enclosed space.
Since last winter, there have been multiple cases of carbon monoxide poisoning in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, linked to improper installation or use of gas water heaters. Many homes are tightly sealed with no windows in the bathroom, making it nearly impossible to ventilate. In such conditions, the risk of gas buildup is extremely high. Experts strongly advise against attempting DIY installations and emphasize the importance of having professionals install the exhaust pipe directly outside. It’s also crucial to ensure proper ventilation when using a gas water heater, especially during bathing.
Moreover, even if a water heater is installed correctly, regular maintenance is essential. According to national standards, gas water heaters should be replaced after 6–8 years. Even within this period, it's recommended to have a professional inspect the unit every one to two years to detect any aging components or potential issues. Users should also check for worn-out hoses, loose connections, or any signs of damage. If any problems are noticed, they should contact the gas company immediately.
Experts warn that using a gas water heater for multiple people in quick succession increases the risk of poisoning. Bathing consumes oxygen, which can lead to incomplete combustion and dangerous gas accumulation. To stay safe, it's advised not to use the heater for more than 30 minutes at a time.
