German University develops flexible, flexible touch panel

A research team composed of Saarland University and Carnegie Mellon University in the United States has developed a flexible and flexible touch panel "iSkin". According to reports, this touch panel can be attached to the back of the hand, the arm, and behind the ears, etc., for operating mobile terminals and music players.

This touch panel utilizes a gasket made of non-conductive silicone rubber to bond together two conductive silicone rubbers based on PDMS (Poly Dimethylsiloxane). The cladding application also requires the use of two silicone rubbers. According to reports, iSkin's overall thickness is 0.7mm.

There are two principles of contact detection. One is to detect changes in capacitance. The other is through the contact of two pieces of conductive rubber to detect whether there is current through. Using these two principles, it is possible to distinguish between light touching and strong pressing of the touch panel.

This time, the panel is flexible and can work normally even if it is bent by 30%. In addition, it can be bent to a radius of curvature of 6mm. Therefore, there is not much sense of discomfort even if it is attached to the skin. The University of Saar also proposed a method of use: a small keyboard made with such a panel is attached to a watch type wearable terminal in a winding manner at ordinary times, and it is used when necessary.
