The purification of nickel electrolysis anolyte to remove copper and copper slag is an important technical problem that has plagued Jinchuan Group Co., Ltd. for more than 30 years. The electrowinning nickel solution uses nickel concentrate to remove copper, resulting in a large amount of nickel concentrate entering the copper slag, resulting in high loss of nickel concentrate and low utilization efficiency; the use of copper slag chlorine leaching to recover nickel consumes a large amount of chlorine, resulting in production costs Increased energy consumption and increased environmental pressure.

Since 2012, the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has completed joint research with the Jinchuan Company's nickel smelter on the basis of the completion of laboratory research. It has conducted copper ion purification in electrowinning nickel solutions and directly removes copper slag as a copper smelter. Industrial raw materials, industrial pilot test. During the joint research period, researchers from Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Industry went deep into the production line to understand the production process, find technical breakthroughs, and find problems and solve problems on the spot with the company's technical staff and workers' masters. They also tackled joint technical difficulties.

The new copper removal process of the joint research is based on Jinchuan's existing production equipment and processes, based on key innovations such as “activation of copper ions in solution” and “maintaining the activity of amorphous nickel sulfide” to solve the copper ion reaction performance and Nickel sulphide activity maintenance and other technical difficulties, research copper ion activator to promote the reaction mechanism of copper ions and nickel sulfide. Through the study, the evaluation indicators of the project were successfully completed, and the continuous operation of the industrial production line reached the requirements of the application technology. The newly formed copper removal process has the characteristics of low cost, green, environmental protection and safety, abolishing the original chlorine leaching recovery process except copper slag, simplifying the post-treatment process of copper slag removal, and saving nickel concentrate resources. After industrial tests, the factors affecting copper-nickel-to-copper-nickel-to-copper ratio purification of copper-ion-activated amorphous nickel sulfides were fully understood, and the technical and operating procedures for the activation of copper ions and the preparation of nickel sulfides for active control were defined as new processes. In addition to the promotion and application of copper, it provided technical support and reached the goal of industrial application testing.

Since continuous industrial application trials in November 2013, the nickel smelter's nickel electrolysis plant has treated 1.3 million cubic meters of solution, reduced 1400 tons of slag emissions, and saved 3,000 tons of nickel concentrates, resulting in an overall economic benefit of 72 million. On this basis, the nickel smelter is undergoing a process of copper removal for a production line with an annual output value of 7.3 billion 600,000 tons of electrolytic nickel in the second nickel electrolysis workshop.
