In a small corner of the store, tucked away from the main display, there's a quiet space that reflects the hard work behind the wallpaper business. A couple, Chen Bing and Zhong Qiuping, have built a solid income through their expertise in wallpaper installation. In 2012, they earned a remarkable 220,000 yuan—proof that even in a seemingly simple job, skill can lead to impressive rewards.
The pair, originally from Lishui, Zhejiang, have been working at Jinhui Wallpaper in Zhoushan for over six years. Their daily routine is grueling: starting at 7:30 AM and often finishing after 6 or 7 PM, with occasional overtime when deadlines are tight. Despite the long hours, they manage to complete about 30 rolls of wallpaper per day, which translates to roughly 1,500 yuan in daily wages.
Chen Bing is the main installer, while his wife assists with simpler tasks. Together, they can finish a 100-square-meter house in just one day. The key to their success lies not only in their speed but also in their precision. Understanding the different types of wallpapers, from PVC to non-woven fabrics, and knowing how to apply them properly is essential. As Hong Jinhui, the store owner, explains, “A good wallpaper worker knows the material, the technique, and the timing.â€
Compared to other construction trades like plastering, wallpapering is less physically demanding. The glue used today is environmentally friendly, even safe enough to be tasted, according to Hong. While the pay might not match the high salaries of white-collar jobs, it’s still substantial—especially when you consider the market demand for home decoration has grown significantly in recent years.
With more people choosing wallpaper over traditional paint, the industry has seen a boom. In fact, over 90% of urban households now use wallpaper for interior design. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s also about durability and ease of maintenance. For many, it’s a better choice than latex paint, which tends to yellow over time.
Chen Bing and Zhong Qiuping’s story highlights an important trend: skilled blue-collar workers are becoming increasingly valuable. Their income, which exceeds the average in Zhoushan, shows that technical expertise can lead to financial stability. As Hong Jinhui puts it, “If I had a son, I’d want him to learn a trade, not just go to college.â€
Their success isn’t just about hard work—it’s about passion, dedication, and mastering a craft that others may overlook. And in a world where college degrees don’t always guarantee a good salary, their story serves as a powerful reminder that skills can open doors to a better life.
