Maintaining proper lubrication is essential for the smooth operation of a cement mill’s main bearing. Operators must regularly monitor the oil temperature, quality, and level in the main bearing. If the bearing temperature becomes abnormal, it's important to increase inspection frequency and report any issues immediately.
In practice, two situations are most likely to cause serious damage—burning of the bearing bush. First, if the bolts securing the scraper on the upper cover of the main bearing loosen, the scraper may shift out of place, preventing it from effectively scraping the lubricating oil. This can lead to oil dripping onto the hollow shaft journal, causing the bearing to run dry and eventually burn. Second, dust or other impurities can block the oil return path in the main bearing housing, preventing the fixed oil ring from drawing oil from the base chamber. This lack of lubrication can also result in burning of the bearing bush.
It's important to follow the recommended oil change intervals and ensure the correct amount of lubricant is added. Proper storage of both new and used oil should also be maintained to prevent contamination and ensure long-term performance.
Choosing the right type of lubricant and adding appropriate additives can significantly improve the performance of the main bearing. The main bearing of a cement mill operates under high load, high linear speed, and frequent impact and vibration. Additionally, the clearance between the bearing bush and the hollow shaft is large, and factors like manufacturing limitations affect its shape, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish. As a result, complete liquid lubrication is often not achievable. Instead, the bearing relies on a thin oil film that reduces friction and wear.
The choice of lubricant depends on several factors, including the operating temperature, the linear speed of the hollow shaft, and the load on the main bearing. In southern regions, for example, a 2.2m x 6.5m cement mill main bearing can use N220 or N320 industrial gear oil during winter and summer, respectively. Since the discharge end of the mill typically runs at a higher temperature than the feeding end, it may be beneficial to use a higher viscosity lubricant at this location.
Additionally, adding a stearic acid polar additive to the lubricating oil can enhance the strength of the oil film, helping to prevent film rupture and ensuring continuous protection of the bearing.
