Demand for furniture makes furniture design hot

With the growing demand for high-quality and aesthetically pleasing furniture, the industry has evolved beyond being just a basic household necessity. Personalized and custom-designed furniture is now increasingly popular, driving innovation and creativity in the sector. As a result, the furniture design profession has experienced rapid growth, attracting more attention and investment.

**High Demand Drives Furniture Design Innovation** Chen Baoguang, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Furniture Association, emphasized that the combination of market demand and export revenue has significantly boosted the development of China's modern furniture industry. Many manufacturers now export their products to Europe and the United States, positioning China as a key player in the global furniture market. However, despite high output, the industry still faces challenges such as low added value and reliance on OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) models, with few Chinese brands directly competing internationally. Moreover, most domestic furniture companies lack originality, often copying designs from others. This lack of creativity leads to intense price competition both domestically and abroad, where low-cost production is no longer a sustainable advantage. According to Chen, the influx of skilled talent into furniture manufacturing is crucial for long-term, sustainable growth. **Talent Structure Lacks an Effective Echelon** Although many companies recognize the importance of hiring designers, it remains challenging to find qualified professionals. Industry statistics suggest that there are over 30,000 furniture companies in China, but fewer than 3,000 designers—meaning only one designer per ten companies. Even among these, there is a wide disparity in skill levels. Experienced and creative designers are rare, while many are limited to basic drafting and imitation work. As a result, the overall quality of design talent is low, and a proper "echelon structure" has yet to be established. Foreign designers are increasingly entering the market, bringing higher standards and expertise. Shi Yan, Planning Department Manager at Beijing Qumei Furniture Co., Ltd., noted that domestic designers often lag behind in terms of conceptual thinking and product innovation. To bridge this gap, many large Chinese furniture companies are now hiring foreign experts at premium salaries. **Design Skills Impact Employment Opportunities** Despite the high demand for talent, many furniture designers struggle to find stable jobs. A key challenge lies in effectively communicating design ideas to both clients and manufacturing teams. Strong communication and technical skills are essential for success in this field. **Education Expands, but Job Prospects Remain Uncertain** In recent years, the number of institutions offering furniture design education has grown rapidly. Universities like Beijing Forestry University and Northeast Forestry University have introduced specialized programs, while vocational colleges in major furniture-producing provinces such as Guangdong and Zhejiang are also focusing on training design talent. Additionally, numerous private training centers now offer related courses. While the number of graduates has increased significantly, the job market remains competitive. Most students face difficulties finding suitable employment, with only a small percentage securing stable positions in the industry.
