Hunan will strengthen children's furniture product testing this year

In the fourth quarter of 2013, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine released the results of a national random inspection on children's furniture quality. Out of 61 batches of products tested, 33 batches failed to meet the required standards. The issues included excessive formaldehyde emissions from wooden parts, unsafe edges and sharp corners, improper hole and gap designs, instability in large cabinets with multiple moving parts, weak strength in push-pull components, and missing or inadequate warning labels. Liu Fagang, the Secretary General of the Hunan Furniture Industry Association, stated that Hunan will enhance its testing of children's furniture this year to ensure better compliance with safety regulations. This comes as concerns grow over the structural safety of children’s furniture, which is often overlooked despite its importance. According to GB 28007-2011, the general technical conditions for children's furniture, all products must avoid dangerous sharp edges and points, and all corners should be rounded or chamfered. However, during the inspection, several brands such as Quanyou, Duaiai, I Love My Family, Floral Blossoming, Sampo Songpu Kingdom, Colorful Life, and Baotiandi were found to have non-compliant edges and missing warning signs. For example, a small square table produced by a Hunan-based factory was found to have unqualified edges and insufficient warning labels. Although children’s furniture accounts for about 18% of total furniture sales, many consumers still prioritize aesthetics over safety. This highlights the need for stricter enforcement of safety standards and increased awareness among parents when choosing furniture for their children. In Changsha, after visiting several large home furnishing stores, it was observed that most children’s furniture currently on sale features rounded edges, suggesting a growing trend toward safer designs. No products with potential safety hazards were found during the visit. Interestingly, even some adult furniture items, like coffee tables, bedside tables, and chairs, were found to have sharp edges and corners. While large retailers typically enforce strict quality control measures, there is still room for improvement across the industry. Peng Xu, General Manager of Jingwanzi Home Plaza, emphasized that both children’s and adult furniture should be designed with human safety in mind. He urged families with children to prioritize safety when purchasing furniture. Looking ahead, Liu Fagang mentioned that the Hunan Furniture Industry Association plans to collaborate with government agencies in 2014 to conduct quality inspections on popular children’s furniture categories and top-selling brands across the province. Companies will be required to provide quality inspection reports, helping consumers make more informed and safer choices.
