Hunan will strengthen children's furniture product testing this year

In the fourth quarter of 2013, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine released the results of a national random inspection on children's furniture quality. Out of 61 batches tested, 33 failed to meet the required standards. The issues included excessive formaldehyde emissions from wooden parts, sharp edges and corners, unsafe holes and gaps, instability in large cabinets with multiple moving parts, weak push-pull components, and missing or unclear warning labels. Liu Fagang, the Secretary General of the Hunan Furniture Industry Association, announced that Hunan will intensify its testing of children's furniture this year to ensure higher safety standards for families. One of the most common problems found was the presence of sharp edges and corners, which are not allowed under GB 28007-2011, the national standard for children's furniture. This standard requires all corners and edges to be rounded or chamfered to prevent injuries. Several brands, including Quanyou, Duaiai, I Love My Family, and Sampo Songpu Kingdom, were among those found non-compliant. According to preliminary statistics, children's furniture now makes up about 18% of total furniture sales. However, despite its growing market share, structural safety is often overlooked. This makes it even more critical for manufacturers to follow strict safety guidelines. In Changsha, after visiting several major home furnishing stores, it was observed that most children’s furniture currently on sale features rounded edges and meets basic safety requirements. No products with potential hazards were found in these stores. Interestingly, some adult furniture items—such as coffee tables, bedside tables, and chairs—still have sharp edges, which can also pose risks, especially in homes with young children. Peng Xu, General Manager of Jingwanzi Home Plaza, noted that large retailers maintain high quality control standards. Any substandard products are quickly removed from shelves. Whether it's children’s or adult furniture, human-centered design should always prioritize safety. Liu Fagang also mentioned that in 2014, the Hunan Furniture Industry Association will collaborate with government agencies to conduct quality inspections on popular furniture categories, including children’s furniture and top-selling brands. Companies will be required to provide quality inspection reports, helping consumers make safer and more informed purchasing decisions.
