Sliding bearings are essential components in many mechanical systems, especially as industrial automation continues to advance. Their application is becoming more widespread due to the increasing need for efficient and reliable motion control. Proper lubrication plays a crucial role in ensuring their smooth operation and longevity.
When selecting grease for sliding bearings, several factors must be considered:
1. **Load and Speed Considerations**:
- For heavy loads and low speeds, use greases with low penetration (stiff consistency) for better load support.
- In high-speed applications, opt for greases with lower cone penetration and good mechanical stability. These typically have a lower base oil viscosity for improved performance.
2. **Temperature Range**:
- The dropping point of the selected grease should be at least 20–30°C higher than the operating temperature.
- In high-temperature environments, ensure that the grease does not exceed its recommended temperature limit.
3. **Environmental Conditions**:
- If the bearing operates in a wet or humid environment, choose greases with good water resistance, such as calcium-based, aluminum-based, or lithium-based types.
- Select greases with strong adhesion properties to prevent them from being washed away.
4. **Grease Selection Based on Operating Conditions**:
- Load < 1 MPa, journal speed < 1 m/s, max temp 75°C → Calcium grease No. 3
- Load 1–6.5 MPa, journal speed 0.5–5 m/s, max temp 55°C → Calcium grease No. 2
- Load > 6.5 MPa, journal speed < 0.5 m/s, max temp 75°C → Calcium grease No. 3
- Load < 6.5 MPa, journal speed 0.5–5 m/s, max temp 120°C → Lithium grease No. 2
- Load > 6.5 MPa, journal speed < 0.5 m/s, max temp 110°C → Calcium-sodium grease No. 2
- Load 1–6.5 MPa, journal speed < 1 m/s, max temp 50–100°C → Lithium grease No. 2
- Load > 5 MPa, journal speed 0.5 m/s, max temp 60°C → Calendering grease No. 2
- In humid conditions, temperatures between 75–120°C → Calcium-sodium grease
- Humid environment, temp < 75°C → Calcium grease No. 3 or aluminum grease
- High-temperature environments (110–120°C) → Lithium or thiole grease
- For high-temperature or high-speed applications, use softer consistency greases.
5. **Grease Reapplication Cycle**:
- Occasional operation, low-speed (shaft speed < 200 rpm): reapply every 5 days if slow, every 3 days if fast.
- Continuous operation at < 40°C: reapply daily if < 200 rpm, once per shift if > 200 rpm.
- Continuous operation at 40–100°C: reapply once per shift if < 200 rpm, twice per shift if > 200 rpm.
