What Are the Environmental Standards for Different Types of Decorative Panels?

In the recently issued national standard GB/T 9846.1-9846.8-2004 for "Plywood," the formaldehyde emission levels were categorized into three grades: E2 ≤ 5.0 mg/L, E1 ≤ 1.5 mg/L, and E0 ≤ 0.5 mg/L. Among these, E1 is a mandatory national health standard, often referred to as the "safety threshold." The E0 standard, on the other hand, represents an international high-quality environmental benchmark. With only 0.5 mg/L of formaldehyde, it’s considered extremely safe. For comparison, drinking water is allowed to have up to 0.9 mg/L of formaldehyde, which means that E0-certified products are even safer than tap water in terms of formaldehyde content.

Products that meet higher environmental standards typically come with a higher price tag due to more advanced production techniques and stricter quality controls. This makes them a better choice for those who prioritize health and sustainability in their home projects.

Common Types of Panels Used in Home Decoration

There are several types of panels commonly used in home decoration, including medium-density fiberboard (MDF), particleboard, veneer, solid wood boards, plywood, melamine boards, finger-jointed boards, OSB (oriented strand board), and formaldehyde-free straw boards. While there are nine main categories, the most popular options in the market today include solid wood boards, finger-jointed boards, and a smaller number of melamine or veneered panels.

Each type of panel has its own advantages and is suitable for different applications. For example, MDF is ideal for cabinetry, while particleboard is often used for furniture frames. Plywood and veneer are great for decorative finishes, and finger-jointed boards offer a cost-effective and durable alternative.

Most panels come in standard sizes, usually around 2440 x 1220 mm, which equals approximately 2.88 square meters per sheet. This helps homeowners estimate how many sheets they need based on their project size. In many households, solid wood boards and finger-jointed boards are preferred for their environmental performance, durability, and aesthetic appeal.

When choosing panels for your home, consider not only the cost but also the long-term benefits of using eco-friendly materials. Investing in high-quality, low-emission panels can improve indoor air quality and contribute to a healthier living environment.
