Manz boosts PERC solar cell efficiency to 20.5%

Manz has significantly strengthened its PERC solar cell production technology, reinforcing its position as a leading technology supplier in the industry. With over 25 years of experience in the solar sector, Manz has built strong relationships with major battery manufacturers worldwide, solidifying its reputation as a reliable and innovative partner. The company’s advanced process technology and equipment enable businesses to easily upgrade their existing production lines to PERC solar cell manufacturing, ensuring efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. As CEO Dieter Manz stated, “Manz has 25 years of experience in the solar industry, and most of the world's major battery manufacturers are our clients.” To meet the growing global demand for high-efficiency, low-cost solar cells, Manz introduced an industry-leading c-Si solar cell production solution with a conversion efficiency of 20.5%. This advanced technology not only optimizes crystalline silicon solar cell production but also reinforces Manz’s leadership in the field. The company showcased its cutting-edge solutions at SNEC PV Power Expo 2014 in Shanghai, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and excellence. Manz’s next-generation production process integrates the VCS 1200 Plasma-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) system, which deposits an alumina passivation layer on the backside of solar cells, combined with the LAS 2400 laser hole opening technology. This combination allows manufacturers to achieve high-efficiency crystalline silicon solar cell production while minimizing costs. The fully automated and easy-to-maintain equipment is suitable for both monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon applications. The VCS 1200 system features a vertical process design with a throughput of up to 1,200 wafers per hour. Its high-performance plasma and advanced carrier system ensure uniform coating without any defects or edge deposits. Additionally, the system’s rapid cleaning concept reduces downtime, making it ideal for continuous production. Unlike other systems, the VCS 1200 can deposit dielectric layers on one side without affecting the other, offering unmatched efficiency and reliability. Complementing the VCS 1200 is the LAS 2400 laser opening system, designed for precise and efficient backside electrode opening. This modular, compact system is perfect for upgrading existing production lines, with a throughput of 2,400 wafers per hour and an opening width ranging from 30 to 100 micrometers. Together, the VCS 1200 and LAS 2400 enhance PERC solar cell efficiency to 20.5%, delivering superior performance and value. In addition, Manz offers the IPSG CEI 4800 wet chemical processing tool, which works seamlessly with the VCS 1200 and LAS 2400 systems to form a complete technical solution. The IPSG CEI 4800 removes heavily doped layers and phosphosilicate glass (PSG) from silicon wafers, using a soft sponge roller to minimize substrate pressure and reduce fragmentation rates. Dieter Manz emphasized the importance of the Chinese market, stating, “China is the world’s largest solar cell producer and a key consumer market.” Manz has been deeply invested in China, establishing a 20,000-square-meter production base in Suzhou in 2012. With approximately 900 employees in Asia, the company continues to expand its presence and collaborate with local partners to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of solar cell production. In the photovoltaic industry, Manz specializes in crystalline silicon solar cell production processes and thin-film solar module solutions. It provides metallization, laser processing, wet chemical processing, vacuum coating, automation, and testing expertise, supporting customers across the entire production chain.
