
A recent study conducted by the Department of Biology at Hong Kong Baptist University investigated the long-term effects of plasticizers on reproductive health. Using white mice as test subjects, researchers discovered that exposure to certain "pigmenting agents"—a type of plasticizer—led to significant changes in offspring. Female mice born from exposed parents showed a female-dominated population, and their reproductive cycles were disrupted. Even male offspring had underdeveloped genitalia, with less than two-thirds the size of normal males, and their sperm counts were significantly reduced. These findings suggest that plasticizers exhibit anti-androgenic properties, which can interfere with hormonal balance and lead to infertility.
Experts believe these results may have implications for human health, indicating that prolonged exposure to plasticizers might have more severe effects on men compared to women. One of the most common plasticizers, DEHP, is known as an environmental hormone. While its exact toxicity to humans remains unclear, it is commonly found in various food products. Compared to melamine, DEHP is far more toxic and can remain in the body for extended periods before being excreted. Long-term exposure may weaken the immune system, reduce energy levels, and lower fertility.
DEHP mimics natural hormones and has been linked to damage in male fertility and early puberty in girls. Prolonged or high-dose consumption could even increase the risk of liver cancer. Since children are still developing their endocrine and reproductive systems, they may be more vulnerable to the harmful effects of DEHP. Potential risks include gender confusion in children, such as underdeveloped genitalia or delayed sexual characteristics.
Although there is no conclusive evidence that DEHP causes cancer in humans, studies on animals have shown that it can trigger carcinogenic reactions. Additionally, phthalates—another group of plasticizers—may disrupt hormone secretion in fetuses and infants, leading to hormonal imbalances and possibly causing precocious puberty in children. Given the widespread presence of these chemicals in everyday life, it's essential to raise awareness about their potential dangers and take steps to minimize exposure.
