In recent days, cold air has been continuously affecting Weihai, leading to light ice formation in Rushan Sea. This has raised concerns about whether this weather trend could negatively impact the local aquaculture, agriculture, seedling, and flower industries. To address these concerns, reporters conducted on-site visits to various sectors.
Aquaculture has experienced minimal impact. According to the Marine Environment Monitoring Center of the Municipal Ocean and Fisheries Bureau, both offshore and indoor aquaculture have not suffered significant damage due to the cold weather. The center predicts that while the cold air is present, there will not be a severe icing situation in the near future. As of 3 p.m. yesterday, no reports of damage to marine aquaculture or indoor breeding had been received by the relevant departments.
Mr. Li, a sea cucumber farmer, noted that if temperatures drop, sea cucumbers tend to become inactive. Since the seawater hasn't frozen, it won't affect the pond. Similarly, Mr. Gong, who breeds indoor seedlings and fry, stated that the recent cold weather has had little effect on indoor farming operations.
Tea trees and fruit trees are also not significantly affected by the cooling weather. According to the staff at the Fruit Tree Tea Workstation, although tea trees and fig trees have relatively low cold tolerance, they are not currently in their growth period. With proper daily protection, there should be no major issues. Winter's low temperatures have minimal impact on fig trees, but a "cold spring" in spring might reduce production.
Liu Jian, manager of the Weide Mountain Tea Farm in Rongcheng City, confirmed that the current temperature drop is not causing significant harm to tea tree growth. Additionally, fig tree growers in areas like Yangjiatai and Fenglin Street were observed to be calm, continuing regular management without implementing special measures.
Green seedlings are growing normally. The city garden department had already taken preventive measures before winter, including setting up wind barriers, wrapping trunks and branches, soil cultivation, applying organic fertilizer, watering, and using antifreeze solutions. These efforts have helped maintain the health of urban landscape plants despite the cold weather.
The Huancui District Garden Bureau mentioned that while some flowering shrubs with lower cold resistance require root protection, more resilient trees like sweet-scented osmanthus are equipped with wind barriers. These measures have proven effective, ensuring the continued healthy growth of the seedlings.
Greenhouse flowers, such as phalaenopsis, alum, and pineapple, which are sensitive to temperature changes, are also unaffected due to the implementation of winter protection measures. At a local greenhouse, the flowers were in excellent condition. The base's responsible person explained that all insulation measures were in place before winter, ensuring flowers can withstand extreme weather.
Daily maintenance includes cleaning the shed film to improve light exposure and increase internal temperature. Applying organic and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers provides essential nutrients and enhances the flowers' ability to resist freezing.
