Taizhou machine tool won 30 years in transformation and upgrading

Taizhou is a true manufacturing hub, where the manufacturing sector constitutes over 85% of the city's total industrial economy. Notably, 95% of this manufacturing activity is privately owned, which highlights that Taizhou's industry is fundamentally driven by private enterprise and is deeply rooted in its manufacturing base. This unique model has shaped the city’s economic landscape for decades. Looking back 30 years, Taizhou’s machine tool enterprises began with modest tools like simple lathes, starting from small family-run workshops. Over time, these local companies gradually expanded their market reach, overcoming numerous challenges such as financial instability, funding shortages, and market fluctuations. The survival of the fittest became a common phenomenon during these tough times, with many firms struggling to stay afloat. The machine tool industry faced periods of reduced orders, declining production, rising inventory, and shrinking exports. In response to these difficulties, the economic growth model needed urgent reform. Over the past five years, under the guidance of the Taizhou Machine Tool Industry Association, entrepreneurs have been exploring more sustainable development paths, focusing on technological innovation and regional collaboration. This shift has led to a more diversified and advanced industry structure. The evolution of Taizhou’s machine tool industry has been remarkable. It has moved from producing basic lathes to developing multi-variety, multi-functional machine tools, including economical CNC lathes. Some large enterprises are now investing in high-end CNC technology, pushing the industry toward higher value and greater competitiveness. Data shows steady growth in both output and value. As of recent years, thousands of Taizhou-based machine tool companies operate across the region. Leading economical CNC lathe manufacturers account for nearly 30% of the national market. In 2007, the annual output was around 40,000 units, valued at approximately 1.5 billion yuan. By 2010, this had increased to 50,000 units with an output value of about 2 billion yuan. Yuhuan County alone saw more than 30,000 units produced between January and June 2010—surpassing the full-year 2009 total. Cutting tool and accessory companies are also experiencing significant growth. Wenling, a key area in Taizhou, hosts over 1,000 cutting tool manufacturers, including 248 large-scale enterprises. Their annual output value reaches nearly 6.4 billion yuan, with a nationwide sales network. More than 10,000 people are involved in wholesale distribution, accounting for 60% of the national market. Sales exceed 10 billion yuan annually, with products exported to Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, and Hong Kong and Macao. By 2011, the overall output value of Taizhou’s machine tool industry surpassed 7 billion yuan. A well-established industrial cluster system emerged, with notable brands such as Jack Machine Tool, Kanmen Machine Tool, Volkswagen Seiki, and Xiling Holdings gaining recognition. Taizhou’s machine tool industry has developed into a block economy, featuring distinct clusters: Yuhuan for economical CNC machines, Wenyu Town for general machine tools, and Jiaojiang, Huangyan, and Luqiao for accessories. Mechanical processing remains a core part of the city’s industrial economy, and Taizhou’s machine tools are known for their cost-effectiveness and practicality. Recent years have seen a focus on innovation and upgrading, with companies striving to move up the value chain. Some products now reach domestic advanced standards, and exports have become a growing trend. In the first seven months of 2012, 700 batches of exported machine tools were inspected, totaling 50,500 units worth 13.361 million USD—an increase of 21.6% in quantity and 16.8% in value. Cutting tools, measuring instruments, and other essential components are vital to the machine tool industry. The completion of the Wenxi Cutting Tool Trading Center has further boosted Taizhou’s position as a major supplier of cutting tools, attracting businesses from across China. Over the past three decades, Taizhou’s machine tool industry has produced numerous successful enterprises and industry leaders. From Yuhuan Kanmen Machine Tool Plant to Zhejiang Yi Machine Tool, and from Dasen Machine Tool to Xinfa Automation, the city has become a powerhouse of innovation and quality. In 2012, despite the challenging global economic climate, the industry continued to evolve. The need for transformation and upgrading became more critical than ever. How Taizhou’s machine tool companies will adapt and thrive in the future remains an exciting story to follow.
